What comes next? ------------------------------------------------------- The Federal Open Market Committee announces its decision on Wednesday, 16 September. Markets expect a 25 basis point hike, lifting the benchmark range to 3.75%-4.00%. It would be the Fed's first increase since July 2023, with annual CPI inflation at 3.4% and August payrolls showing continued hiring. Chair Kevin Warsh faces a difficult communication test. President Donald Trump's preference for lower borrowing costs adds political tension, but the committee's inflation assessment remains central. Investors will scrutinise whether Warsh presents any increase as a standalone adjustment or signals further tightening. Much of the expected hike is already reflected in prices. The bigger uncertainty is the dot plot, which shows officials' individual rate projections. A steeper tightening path than markets anticipate could intensify pressure on bonds and equities. A less hawkish outlook could reverse part of the recent move, although the projections are not binding commitments. Oil disruptions and rising yields raise the stakes -------------------------------------------------- Saudi Arabia's East-West oil pipeline has been shut following drone attacks, disrupting an important alternative to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Traffic through Hormuz remains severely restricted, while Houthi activity threatens Red Sea routes. A regional meeting scheduled in Oman has also been postponed, reducing hopes for an immediate diplomatic breakthrough. Brent traded above $107 a barrel on Tuesday. Higher energy costs complicate the inflation outlook: they directly affect fuel bills and can feed into transport and production costs. The policy question is how persistent those pressures become and whether they spread beyond energy. The US 10-year Treasury yield reached roughly 5.04% on Tuesday, its highest since 2007. That leaves markets sensitive to any signal of further tightening. Higher borrowing costs can weigh on equity valuations. Gold's response is less straightforward: geopolitical demand may support it, while a stronger dollar can work in the opposite direction. Three scenarios: how to read the Fed's signal --------------------------------------------- A 25bp hike is widely expected. If the updated projections broadly match market expectations, attention will turn to Warsh's press conference. Investors will look for clues about the conditions for another increase and whether the committee leaves room for a pause. A more hawkish outcome would signal a steeper tightening path than markets currently expect. That could push Treasury yields higher, pressure equities and support the dollar against the euro. Simply pointing towards additional hikes would not necessarily constitute a surprise: the message would need to exceed what is already priced in. A dovish surprise could take the form of a hold or a hike accompanied by a clearer pause signal. Either could support risk assets and weaken the dollar, although concerns about growth or policy credibility could complicate that response. These are conditional scenarios, not predictions of the market's direction. ### Risk factors * Dot plot repricing: a steeper projected rate path than markets anticipate could trigger further selling in Treasuries and equities, even if the hike itself meets expectations. * Communication risk: differences between the statement, projections and press conference could produce abrupt reversals.
