Updated 06:04:29 17/09/2026 ![Fed Hikes 25bps in Hawkish Shift, Dollar Surges](https://assets.basitfx.com/cms/medium_20e3dff5-5869-4f43-96d3-b1dedb757b2c.jpg) FOMC: First rate hike in 3 years -------------------------------- The Federal Reserve raised interest rates by 25 basis points on 16 September, lifting the federal funds target range to 3.75%-4.00%. The unanimous 12-0 decision marked the first increase since July 2023. The move was widely expected, but the updated projections and Chair Kevin Warsh's message kept markets focused on the possibility of further tightening. The median rate projection points to a target range of 4.00%-4.25% at the end of 2026. That implies one additional quarter-point increase this year. These projections reflect officials' individual assessments of appropriate policy, rather than a binding commitment from the committee. The change from June is significant. Officials now envisage a higher rate path, suggesting that bringing inflation under control could require tighter policy for longer than previously projected. For investors, the question is how much additional restraint the economy will need and how long it will take to work. The dollar and Treasury yields rise after the decision ------------------------------------------------------ The dollar strengthened following the meeting, reaching a seven-week high in trading on 17 September. The dollar index traded around 100.3, while the two-year Treasury yield reached approximately 4.72%. The euro also weakened against the US currency. These are session readings rather than live quotes. The direction of the move is the more useful signal: investors adjusted to a higher expected path for US interest rates. Short-dated Treasury yields are particularly sensitive to changes in expectations for Fed policy. Further increases in yields could put pressure on equity valuations by raising borrowing costs and the returns available from bonds. A stronger dollar can also tighten financing conditions for borrowers with dollar-denominated debt. Whether those pressures persist will depend on incoming data and how much tightening markets have already priced in. Strong retail sales add to the case for tighter policy ------------------------------------------------------ US retail and food services sales rose 1.2% in August, according to data released before the Fed decision on 16 September. The increase followed a revised 0.5% decline in July and exceeded economists' expectations. The retail sales control group increased 1.4%. This measure excludes automobiles, gasoline, building materials and food services, and feeds into estimates of consumer spending in GDP. Its strength suggests that the headline rebound was not solely the result of higher spending at petrol stations. There is still an important limitation: retail sales are measured in dollar terms and are not adjusted for price changes. Stronger sales therefore do not translate directly into an equivalent increase in the volume of goods purchased. Nevertheless, the report provides evidence of resilient spending as the Fed raises borrowing costs. What matters after the first hike? ---------------------------------- The next test is whether inflation eases while consumer demand and employment remain resilient. Continued spending strength alongside persistent price pressure could reinforce the case for another increase. A broader slowdown would make that decision more difficult. One softer inflation reading would not, by itself, establish a lasting trend. Equally, one strong spending report cannot show that households will absorb higher borrowing costs indefinitely. The outlook depends on how these indicators develop together. Markets will now assess incoming releases against the higher rate path laid out in September. Data that exceed those expectations could lift yields and support the dollar further. Weaker figures could reverse part of the recent repricing without immediately changing the Fed's policy stance. ### Risk factors * Further rate repricing: persistent inflation or stronger demand could push market expectations above the path shown in September's projections. * Growth disappointment: weaker employment or spending could challenge expectations that the economy will remain resilient under higher rates. * Dollar strength: further appreciation could pressure other currencies and increase financing strains for borrowers with dollar-denominated debt. * Energy costs: renewed supply disruptions could sustain inflation while reducing households' spending power. * Communication risk: differences between officials' projections and subsequent public remarks could trigger abrupt moves in bonds, equities and currencies.
