Attention now turns to Thursday’s US jobless claims release at 12:30 UTC and the Trump-Xi meeting in Washington. The five-year Treasury yield moved above 5% in secondary-market trading, while the 10-year traded around 5.1%. At Wednesday’s auction, the Treasury sold $70 billion of five-year notes at a yield of 5.033%, above the 5.002% quoted immediately beforehand. The economic backdrop added to the pressure. September’s preliminary S&P Global Composite PMI rose to 58.4 from 56.0, signalling the fastest expansion in US business activity in more than five years. Input costs also rose at their fastest pace in nearly four years. Together, stronger activity and persistent price pressure strengthened the case for keeping monetary policy restrictive. Higher US yields can weigh on equity valuations by increasing the rate used to discount future earnings. They can also make dollar assets more attractive, although currency movements depend on interest-rate expectations elsewhere.
