For investors following the company behind Claude, the questions go beyond when its shares might start trading. How much of its rapid revenue growth can continue, what valuation could that support, and how does its CEO’s call to slow AI development fit into the picture? Has Anthropic filed for an IPO? ------------------------------- Anthropic confirmed on 1 June 2026 that it had confidentially submitted a draft registration statement on Form S-1 to the US Securities and Exchange Commission. The submission gives the company the option to proceed with an IPO after the SEC review, subject to market conditions and other factors. It does not mean that an offering has been approved or that a listing date has been set. That distinction matters. Preparations can advance while the timing, offer size and share price remain undecided. Until Anthropic publishes its offering terms, those details should be treated as open questions. What could Anthropic’s IPO valuation be? ---------------------------------------- Anthropic’s last confirmed private funding round provides a starting point. In May, the company raised $65 billion at a post-money valuation of $965 billion. That was the value assigned to the business following the investment, not an IPO price. Media reports subsequently described discussions about an offering that could raise up to $100 billion at a valuation of around $2 trillion. Those figures remain reported ambitions rather than announced terms. Whether public investors would accept that valuation depends on growth, costs and the financial disclosures accompanying an eventual offering. How fast is Anthropic’s revenue growing? ---------------------------------------- The reported growth is substantial, but the figures need careful reading. Preliminary revenue reportedly exceeded $11.5 billion for the second quarter of 2026. Separately, Anthropic’s annualised revenue run-rate reportedly exceeded $65 billion by the end of July, compared with approximately $47 billion in May. That represents an increase of roughly 38% in the annualised measure. Run-rate extrapolates a recent pace of sales across a full year. It does not mean Anthropic has already generated $65 billion in annual revenue, and revenue is not profit. For an eventual IPO, the next question is how much of that sales growth translates into a sustainable business after computing, research and other operating costs. Competition extends beyond the listing race ------------------------------------------- OpenAI remains a central competitor. CEO Sam Altman has ruled out an IPO in 2026. That changes the potential listing sequence, but competition for customers and investment continues. An earlier debut would give Anthropic access to public markets; it would not establish a lasting commercial advantage by itself. Why is Dario Amodei calling for slower AI development? ------------------------------------------------------ In his September essay, _We must pace the frontier_, Amodei argued that improvements in AI capabilities should slow enough for safety measures to keep up. His proposals include independent evaluators working inside AI companies and broader coordination on safety. The concern is that increasingly capable systems could outpace the industry’s ability to understand and control them. He reiterated the call at Dreamforce on 15 September. This does not amount to an announcement that Anthropic will stop selling products or abandon its IPO. It does raise a question for prospective investors: how will the company balance commercial growth with the limits its leadership believes responsible development requires?
