Updated 06:06:04 25/09/2026 ![Bitget Loses $351.6 Million in Hot Wallet Breach](https://assets.basitfx.com/cms/medium_cebebbf9-c891-4b30-8b06-ff23ae238de0.jpg) Bitget Reports Major Breach as Withdrawals Are Suspended -------------------------------------------------------- Bitget reported a security breach on 24 September, with losses estimated by the exchange at around $352 million. It suspended withdrawals following the incident while keeping deposits and trading open. The exchange said the breach affected part of its infrastructure and that its remaining holdings were unaffected. According to CEO Gracy Chen's preliminary account, attackers manipulated transaction data and caused the exchange's authorisation process to approve unauthorised transfers. Chen said the attack did not involve stolen private keys. The precise entry point and the identity of those responsible remain under investigation. The distinction matters. Protecting private keys is only one part of exchange security: the systems that prepare and approve transactions also need to withstand interference. A fuller technical report would help establish which controls failed and how the exchange has addressed them. Bitget says its protection fund is sufficient to cover the reported loss. The exchange lists the fund's holdings in Bitcoin, so its dollar value changes with the market. That assurance is separate from the immediate question facing users: when withdrawals will resume and whether any restrictions will remain. Withdrawal Access Is the Immediate Test --------------------------------------- A withdrawal suspension makes custody risk tangible. A balance displayed on an exchange is not the same as funds available to transfer. Users depend on the platform's operational systems and its ability to restore access. The next developments to watch are updates on withdrawals, the scope of the incident and the process for covering losses. A clear timetable and a detailed explanation of the security changes could help rebuild confidence. Prolonged restrictions or conflicting updates could raise further concerns. Movements of stolen assets are another source of uncertainty. Transfers to exchanges or attempts to sell large amounts could affect prices, particularly in less liquid markets. A transfer between wallets, however, does not by itself establish that a sale has taken place. Bitcoin ETF Inflows Slow but Remain Positive -------------------------------------------- Separately, US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded a sixth consecutive trading session of net inflows on 24 September, according to Farside Investors. The pace slowed during the week, although the funds still attracted approximately $2.25 billion across the first four sessions. Smaller daily inflows indicate a slower pace of net investment through these products, not a reversal into outflows. ETF flows also capture only one part of Bitcoin demand and should be read alongside trading activity across other markets. The exchange breach and ETF figures describe different developments. One concerns the security and accessibility of assets held at a particular venue; the other measures net flows through US-listed investment products. Neither alone establishes the direction of the wider crypto market. What to Watch Into the Weekend ------------------------------ Bitget's operational updates remain the most immediate focus. Confirmation that withdrawals have resumed would answer an important question, but a fuller assessment will also depend on the investigation and the measures taken to prevent another incident. Further movements of stolen assets could attract attention, especially if they suggest potential sales. Their market impact would depend on the amount, execution method and available liquidity, rather than the transfer alone. Weekend conditions may amplify price moves if liquidity becomes thinner. That can mean wider spreads and greater slippage, particularly in smaller tokens or individual trading pools.
